ReBörn's top 10 Thrash metal bands of all time

We took into account their trayectory as artists, number of hits, and most importantly, what distinguish them from the others. If you think that this is not the definitive ranking of thrash metal bands, feel free to leave your oppinion in the comments, and we'll take it into account. We know this is a hard task to do, but we present to you what we believe are the most important thrash metal bands in the scene.

10. Sepultura:

One band that doesn't belong to german or north american thrash movements. Formed in Brazil on 1984 by Max and Igor Cavalera, Sepultura has made it's way through metal landscape with their fast paced tempos and straight forward agressive vocal style. They have been trough some differente metal styles troughout their career, but with some great thrashy albums like Arise and Roots, a total must listen for any metalhead.

9. Sodom:

Really fast tempo, heavy growls, awesome breakdowns, this is what maniacs sound like. From Germany, Tom Angelripper has been delivering all the good work since 1981. Like all thrash bands from the 80's it has its distinctive reverb and metal tones. One of the favourite albums here is Agent Orange (1989), album full of catchy riffs and pretty interesting tunes. Although they have been clasified as band clone or many other genres, this is a really good headbanging band to listen to.

8. Havok:

This is one of the "newest" bands on the genre, with four albums made. But even mare already playing for 15 years now. Their last album Conformicide released on 2017, is one of the most elaborated metal albums  of the past years. Great guitar riffs based on dark melodies, going most of the time full speed with right on point drum work. All of that matches perfectly with David Sanchez agressive voice. One promising band to keep an eye on.

7. Destruction

This is what metal sounds like, nice rythm changes, catchy riffs and a speed of light double bass drums, they even have a Nuclear blast record, from Germany in 1982, previusly known as Knight of Demon comes this aggresive band to bring really good and fast-paced music. With only one guitar, they bring eternal devastation (1986), where they left the black metal side, to start a new promise of good ol' thrash metal.

6. Slayer:

One of the big 4, for many is the heaviest band on thrash metal. The fastest and more agressive. Their songs feature tons of speed with explosive drum beats by legendary drummer Dave Lombardo, filled with ultra heavy guitar riffs by Kerry King and until some years ago Jeff Hannemann (RIP) everything lead by straight forward punchy lyrics by the bass and singer Tom Araya.  Makers of some of the most heavy and restless songs on thrash metal, the band for those that like the heavier stuff.

5. Anthrax

This is a band that is not afraid of changes. Remarkable punk an metal influence, awesome bass, and even have a collaboration with Public Enemy it has it all. From New York, Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker formed this one of the "Big Four" in 1981. Their most remarkable work, Among the living (1987) brings awesome riffs, not only from guitars, but also a lot of heavy bass is present there. Fun fact: there was a discussion about wether the character from the cover art was the Poltergeist antagonist, or a Stephen King's novel chracter. It turned out to be none of them.

4. Overkill:

One of the very first bands on the thrash metal scene, being formed on 1980. 19 Studio albums made them one of the bands with more releases on thrash metal. Being Bobby Ellsworth their main leader and their whole time singer, he gives the band and outrageous power with his voice. Great guitar and drums work make his band a great one on thrash history.

3. Testament

This is a pretty solid band. It has great vocals delivered by Chuck Billy. It is an american band formed in 1982. They're a band that still keeps it up to what metal should sound like. Although it is not part of the "Big Four", it is referred as one of the "Big Eight". Dark Roots of Earth, Formation of Damnation, The New Order, Souls of Black... there are a lot of gems in what Testament has to offer. Definetly is a can't miss if you want to start listening to thrash, and if you already do, you know we're right.

2. Megadeth:

The band made by one of the greatest musicians in metal history Dave Mustaine. With more than 30 years of career, 15 studio albums and recording right now #16, Megadeth still stands today as one of the main reference points to thrash metal. Mustaine could arguably be the most technical composer in thrash metal history. Megadeth songs are filled with heavy, fast, agressive and unique guitar riffs. Since Mustaine has always got first class lead guitar players by his side, you are going to have tons of mind blowing solos with their music. Over all of that, you can find all kind of topics on the lyrics. Politics, religion, war, personal relationships, witchcraft...and the list goes on. Their latest album Distopya, released on 2016 is an outstanding work, being the 2nd most succesful album on their history, making Megadeth earn a Grammy. With more than 50 millions copies sold of their albums, Megadeth is a totally must listen to on this subgenre.

1. Metallica

Well, you may have seen it coming. This is by far the greatest thrash metal band of all times. Sure, like most bands, it has it's trials on different kind of sounds, but this is what keep us thrilled every time they release a new album. Trascending the 80's decade making Metal a genre that will never die. Many bassists, two constant members, the most impressive vocals in a metal band. The perfect harmony not only between drums and guitars, but also between lead and rythms. Released in 1988, the album ...And justice for all is a all time favourite with tracks like "Blackened", "The Shortest Straw", "Harvester of Sorrow" and their mos iconic one: "One". This band being already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, several Grammys and even granted an MTV icon, this band keeps their fans thrilled with what the've achieved, and more important, what is yet to come.
